Donald Trump's new tone is a lot like his old tone
Trump's campaign picks a fight with a cemetery while their boss lobs sexist insults at Kamala Harris
Remember just about a month ago when the news media told you of a “new softness” emanating from a “changed Donald Trump” and lauded his call for “unity” in a Republican convention speech in which he managed to go a few moments at the very beginning without insulting anyone before going on to express his deep admiration for Victor Orban and Kim Jong Un?
Let’s check in on the “new softness” from this “unity” candidate, shall we?
On Monday, Trump and his campaign staff goon squad visited barged into Arlington National Cemetery, shoving a cemetery staffer who had the audacity to remind them that political activity is not allowed on cemetery grounds.
On Tuesday, Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung issued a statement claiming the cemetery employee was “clearly suffering from a mental health episode” while promising to release video footage that would exonerate the Trump camp (footage that, you will not be surprised to learn, the Trump camp has not released) while Trump strategist Chris LaCivita issued a separate statement calling the employee “a despicable individual” who “does not deserve to represent the hollowed grounds of Arlington National Cemetery” — “misspelling the word hallowed,” as the Associated Press noted.1
On Wednesday, Trump running mate JD Vance responded to criticism of the Trump campaign’s conduct at the cemetery by saying Kamala Harris “can go to hell,” though Harris hadn’t said anything about the matter.2
On Thursday, the United States Army rebuked the Trump campaign, explaining that they “were made aware of federal laws, Army regulations and DoD policies, which clearly prohibit political activities on cemetery grounds. An ANC [Arlington National Cemetery] employee who attempted to ensure adherence to these rules was abruptly pushed aside … This incident was unfortunate, and it is also unfortunate that the ANC employee and her professionalism has been unfairly attacked. ANC is a national shrine to the honored dead of the Armed Forces, and its dedicated staff will continue to ensure public ceremonies are conducted with the dignity and respect the nation’s fallen deserve.” In response, Trump strategist LaCivita took to twitter to denounce the United States Army as “hacks.”
Somehow Wordle.com The New York Times managed to turn the whole incident into a story about Trump winning “the allegiance of many veterans and active service members as the embodiment of peace through strength at home and the withdrawal of forces abroad.”3
Whew, that was a lot. But that’s just the part about Trump’s goon squad shoving an Arlington National Cemetery employee so he could make a wildly inappropriate campaign ad, then being a bunch of dicks about it.
Trump spent Wednesday morning on Truth Social, the right-wing social media site to which he retreated when other, slightly-less-right-wing social media sites like Twitter and Facebook briefly told him to get lost after he incited a deadly insurrection at the United States capitol. In just a few hours Wednesday morning, Trump re-posted more than dozen QAnon posts and promoted calls for a “military tribunal” to judge former president Obama and to imprison Kamala Harris, Joe Biden, Bill Gates, and Anthony Fauci. Trump’s posting frenzy even included promoting a deeply sexist attack on Kamala Harris that Wordle.com The New York Times sanitized into a sign of Trump’s “willingness to continue to shatter longstanding political norms.”
Donald Trump is a cruel and virulent racist who became president after asking for and receiving Russia’s help in the 2016 election and then as president fired the FBI director for investigating Russia’s attacks on our electoral system and then spent four years as president encouraging his supporters to use violence on his behalf, laying the groundwork for the violent insurrection he incited in a desperate attempt to cling to power after losing re-election, and since leaving office he has been convicted of 34 criminal counts stemming from his attempts to cover up his relationship with Stormy Daniels in the weeks leading up to the 2016 election, in addition to being found civilly liable for slandering a woman he sexually assaulted.
That’s who he has been, who he is, and who he will remain.
Trump is never gonna change, and neither are the news companies intent on pretending otherwise.
The New York Times initially published LaCivita’s rant with the typo intact, then quietly cleaned up his mistake for him. I don’t care much about the typo itself —typos happen, life is imperfect — but the Times correcting it for LaCivita is of a piece with the news media’s general habit of covering for Trump by cleaning up the incoherence in his statements.
JD Vance seems really worried there might still be someone in America who doesn’t know that he’s a sexist prick.
Rest assured, JD, we know!
Wordle.com (the NY Times) apparently believes Harris and Democrats are a bigger threat than Trump and the GOP.
This veteran thinks that “hollowed” is actually appropriate for the NYeT.
While I get that the woman did not feel safe pressing charges (thanks US Army!) I don’t see why the US Army/ANC couldn’t press charges for violating The Law. In this case, the US Army is the cuck PAB. Do Something!
