I just canceled my wapo subscription and became a paid subscriber here. It used to be important to me to support local news, and then they were bought out by right-leaning media corporations. Then I switched to The Guardian, The NY Times, and The Washington Post. Of those, after this year, The Guardian is the only one I'm still supporting.
My money will continue going to individual journalists and writers doing good work on their own, just like my money now goes directly to candidates and not to the DNC and it's various groups.
Imagine having hundreds of billions of dollars - as much freedom and security as any human being has ever had - and still being scared of Donald Trump.
I have WaPo and NY Times subscriptions, and even though the Times endorsed Harris, their coverage of Biden and now Harris is abysmal. So I canceled both. Enough of the sane-washing and treating the fpotus as just another candidate. Neither of the two publications give refunds, so my subs still stand. However I am allowed comments, when they're open. Briefly today WaPo stopped comments at about the 27K mark - 27,000 comments! I have never seen more than 12K or 13K before, usually on war stories. They must have received plenty of flak, and opened up the general article and William Lewis, the publisher's, lying excuse column to comments again. So I commented. Which is just venting, it will not reverse the act. But we must speak up, encourage voting, don't give up. Readers are furious at this betrayal of bowing to authoritarianism. Judges, legislative bodies, religious leaders, and the press, are falling in line and failing us. We the People must stop this slide into fascism. I voted already, and ask everyone I know who cares about our nation to vote.
My comment over at dearlstephens.substack - You've finally figured out why the MSM repeats tRumps lies - "We were only following orders". We've heard that before.
The 'silver lining' in the failure of the billionaire-owned Washington Post and LA Times is that we're all even more motivated to get Kamala Harris elected and turn this country around. Get out there and do something. I was on the phone banks today and will again tomorrow!
I canceled my WAPO subscription today. They have sane washed tRump for far too long. If a free press can't call out the bullshit and own up then we are fucked.
Why do you think a corporate sponsored media source is the “free press“? Good Lord no wonder we can’t have anything nice. Not a single such entity has anything to do with the news or the free press. They simply disseminate a carefully crafted narrative benefiting no one but themselves and the major stakeholders.
Thank you for this post and analysis. I just un-subscribed from the Washington Post, because as you say, it has chosen darkness. To cancel its endorsement is a stunning act of cowardice and self-interest on Mr. Bezos’s part. I have been studying Fascism and the Third Reich since I wrote my high school senior advanced social studies final project on fascism and the transition in Germany from post World War I to World War II many decades ago. It is unbelievable but true that the United States is a whisker away from becoming a fascist state led by a wannabe dictator.
The Washington Post editorial staff of November 1, 1880 did NOT endorse Garfield. It rejected him.
Addressed "To the American People," it declared that if Americans elected Garfield, the would be setting their seal of approval on the criminal subversion of their dearest right - the right of self-government."
Thank you for flagging that. I wrote more hastily than normal (and normal for me is pretty hasty) today, with more typos than usual as a result. Fixed now.
Another unfortunate indicator and symptom our country is losing the fight against our pre-existing conditions…what’s sad is our disease has proven in the past it is manageable. We are a nation of gamblers (one of several pre-existing conditions)…the odds are now placing bets on what happens when ambition and opportunity are forced to share an airless room.
…”What’s the turning point, and what’s the cost? It’s never cheap, fast or good. The greatest generation finally entered world war 2 only because yellow racism trumped German Nazi complaisant familiarity…just as surely as COVID was the only thing that guaranteed a Trump defeat in 2020”…

I already canceled mine from prior shenanigans!
Wish I could cancel twice!

Time to show up - if you haven’t already.

Shattering. Obeying in advance. No one will save us. We must save ourselves. Canceled Washington Post today. Thirty years of reading it, gone.

Mr. Stevens is a tribalist mouthpiece. Tribalism is the vehicle that ushered us to this third world shit hole. Throw off the illusion of choice.

I grew up reading the Post in its heyday - the Pentagon Papers and Watergate era. It’s a travesty now. Cancelled.

If I may, get a fucking grip.
Completely right, Jamison. Depressing, but right. What a display of cowardice from Bezos and his minions.
Bezos makes a mess
of the free press.

No worries! I know how it is.
Just cancelled
WAPO…disappointed, but not surprised.
